From passive sensors to patient voice: the value of integrating wearable data with eCOAs

Last updated: October 26, 2026

Combining Digital Health Technologies (DHTs) with electronic Clinical Outcome Assessments (eCOAs) is becoming a key factor in shaping patient-centered clinical trial design. As sponsors adopt more decentralized and hybrid models, consolidating active and passive data collection into a single digital platform can substantially reduce the burden on participants. By minimizing the number of devices, interfaces, and procedures, integrated DHT-eCOA systems help ensure smoother engagement and improve the usability of trial technologies.

From the patient perspective, linking wearable sensor data with self-reported outcomes enhances the relevance and coherence of study tasks. Participants gain a clearer understanding of how their daily experiences contribute to the evidence base, which can build trust and sustain motivation throughout the trial.

Integrated platforms also provide timely, personalized support through automated reminders, contextual guidance, and remote monitoring workflows, helping participants complete tasks accurately, while feeling reassured rather than overwhelmed. By streamlining digital interactions and displaying device adherence in a single app, DHT-eCOA integration gives participants access to valuable insights without adding complexity or a learning curve.

Ultimately, this unified approach improves retention, boosts patient satisfaction, and delivers higher-quality data that more accurately reflect the patient’s health status.
